The Intelligent Equalizer: Preserving Battery Performance in Heavy-Duty Vehicles

Context

With the centralization of electronic architectures and the emergence of software-defined vehicles, critical truck functions rely on an increasing number of high-performance electronic control units. Their power supply can no longer be managed as a passive electrical distribution system.
Manufacturers need solutions capable of controlling power distribution between the various ECUs, protecting each power supply channel and ensuring the availability of priority functions according to the vehicle’s operating state.

ACTIA’s Solution

To address this challenge, ACTIA developed the Intelligent Equalizer, an innovative power conversion solution that maintains battery pack balance while providing stable, secure power to onboard equipment.
Far more than a simple converter, the Intelligent Equalizer continuously balances battery charge to limit premature wear and optimize battery performance over time. The solution also incorporates diagnostic functions to monitor the condition of the electrical system and anticipate potential failures.
Integrated into the vehicle’s electronic architecture, the solution makes it possible to:
  • selectively power ECUs and equipment according to the truck’s operating modes;
  • prioritize available power for critical ECUs and functions;
  • isolate a channel affected by an overload or fault without shutting down the entire electrical network;
  • monitor the electrical status of each output and transmit diagnostic data to the central architecture;
  • remotely activate, shut down or restart equipment;
  • adapt power distribution strategies through software without modifying the physical architecture.
Energy management thus becomes a controllable function of the SDV architecture, just like the vehicle’s other functions.
This project illustrates ACTIA’s expertise in power conversion, intelligent energy management, onboard diagnostics and power electronics for commercial vehicles. ACTIA helps manufacturers develop energy solutions that are more reliable, more efficient and adapted to the constraints of harsh environments.

Customer Benefits

  • Preserve battery service life.
  • Improve the availability of critical ECUs and functions.
  • Provide more selective protection for electrical and electronic equipment.
  • Locate power supply faults more quickly.
  • Enable a more flexible, configurable and scalable architecture.
  • Improve control over the vehicle’s electrical consumption according to its different operating states.
  • Simplify diagnostic and maintenance operations.

Operator testimonial

The Intelligent Equalizer enables us to preserve long-term battery performance while ensuring a reliable power supply for onboard equipment. This solution directly helps improve vehicle availability and reduce the risk of electrical system failure.

Electrical Engineering Manager, leading international truck manufacturer

With conventional electrical distribution, ECU protection and power supply remain largely fixed by the wiring. The solution developed with ACTIA enables us to monitor each channel, isolate a fault and maintain power to priority functions. We now have a controllable and diagnosable power distribution system that is ready to support the evolution of our software-defined architecture.

Multiplexing & electronic control

Evolve the electronic architecture of heavy goods vehicles towards Software Defined Vehicles.

Context

For one of its customers, an international truck manufacturer, ACTIA supported the gradual evolution of a conventional multiplexed electronic architecture towards a more integrated architecture capable of meeting the new requirements of connected vehicles.
Manufacturers now have to manage an increasing number of onboard functions, including safety, connectivity, diagnostics, energy management, driver comfort and digital services. In this context, legacy architectures based on multiple distributed ECUs are gradually reaching their limits in terms of complexity, scalability and maintenance.
The challenge was to preserve investments made in existing architectures while preparing the transition towards future centralized architectures and software-defined vehicles (SDVs).

ACTIA’s Solution

To address this challenge, ACTIA supported the design and evolution of a scalable electronic architecture based on zonal controllers capable of orchestrating the vehicle’s various functions.
This approach structures the architecture around proven electronic building blocks while retaining the flexibility required to integrate new functions progressively. The controllers manage vehicle functions, communication between the various subsystems and the supervision of onboard equipment within a coherent, scalable architecture.
Beyond supplying controllers, ACTIA supports manufacturers in the end-to-end design of the vehicle’s electronic architecture. This expertise covers multiplexing, critical function integration, cybersecurity, diagnostics and preparation for future HPC (High-Performance Computing) architectures.
This progressive approach enables manufacturers to evolve their current platforms towards more centralized, software-oriented architectures without major technological disruption or the need to redesign existing architectures.

Customer Benefits

  • Simplify the vehicle’s electronic architecture.
  • Facilitate the integration of new functions and technologies.
  • Reduce the complexity of onboard networks.
  • Preserve investments made in existing platforms.
  • Prepare the transition towards zonal architectures and software-defined vehicles.
  • Accelerate the development of new vehicle generations.
  • Improve the maintainability and scalability of electronic architectures.

Operator testimonial

ACTIA’s approach enables us to evolve our electronic architecture step by step. We will benefit from a robust platform that meets today’s requirements while preparing for the integration of future centralized architectures and software-defined services.
